Why don't americans take some responsiblity for what's been going on in Latin America?

I have heard this stuff before but there is always a question left in my mind. Why would the US do this kind of thing? What do we gain? Why would we want to destabilize Mexico? Are we just mean? I don't think so. Before I can accept it as truth, I will have to know the reason behind it.
