Is there any way to protect my fingers when chalking? ?

I've been doing various sidewalk chalk pictures, and in order to get the color to look solid I have to rub it into the sidewalk using my fingers. Due to the friction and different grooves in the sidewalk my fingers get all torn up. I've tried using gloves, but it fades the chalk and doesn't work. Is there anything at all that I can do to protect my poor fingers? Pleeease help!
